Thanks, Judy, I had a good day.
Your
response below seems to me a little like the "random acts of kindness"
thing. Nobody has a monopoly on any word; Hegel doesn't have a monopoly on the
words "thesis" and "antithesis". But if the words ring such a loud Hegelian bell
for you, I understand. Then please substitute the sentence "Nobody moves
directly from one view to a very different one." (I had forgotten,
actually, that I had used the words "thesis" and "antithesis" for this--any
number of words could be used for it, but I was linking up with Lance's use of
"antithetical".) Also, the synthesis part, in Hegel's quite specific
sense, is the hallmark of the Hegelian dialectic, and was missing from my
post, unless you meant the place in my little model where I said that A begins
to defend a "version of B's view". I don't mean a synthesis of views A and B. I
mean A has developed a provisional understanding of B's view. For Hegel,
the synthesis is the end, whereas in my model, this is only the beginning for A,
who eventually ends up at the "very different view". Also, I wasn't implying
this model is normative (i.e., that you should always move to another view when
you encounter one! That would be nonsense!), just that it's possible, and I was
speculating on the psychology of it. I may have been too optimistic
though.
And
now I have spent WAY more words explaining the model than the model was worth!
But that's the way it goes. The alternative is to ignore. I hope that's clearer,
Judy.
Debbie

Not that such conversations exclude the work of the Holy Spirit, who inhabits all believers!Do you really believe the Holy Spirit interacts with the Hegelian dialect - which is (in Hegels own words) the spirit of this world?
