Sounds like a desert. It might be metaphorical for places that are not hospitable to demons. This is speculation on my part too but I think demons feed off humans especially human pain, anger and despair. When they are evicted from their host, they search for another. One bible study we wondered what did Jesus do with all the demons he exorcised? We're pretty sure he won't let them inhabit another human or come back to the original host. But then again, it's not yet time for them to be destroyed or sent to the abyss (whatever/wherever that is). Perhaps he locked them into an existence in an arid place (i.e. no human host).
