Jesus is accused of fellowshipping with sinners and He defends this practice - he does not explain it away (Matt 9:11ff) DM: I don't find any accusation of fellowship with
sinners in this passage.
JD: Eating and reclining with sinners is fellowship. jt: Would you also call a business luncheon (ie swimming with the sharks) fellowship JD? In John 2:24 we are told that "Jesus did not commit himself unto them (the ppl who believed on his name because of the miracles they saw), because he knew all men (or he knew what was in all men); we need to go with His version of the meaning of the word fellowship. DM: Thequestion is posed why he eats with
sinners. Fellowship implies a sharing ofcommon interests and goals.
Jesus says he was not having fellowship with them. He was eating with them
to call them to repentance. Surely you understand this
difference.
JD: I just spent the entire day with my son -- teaching him what he does not know but what he has need to know .......... I call this fellowship. Matthew 9:13
"... for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." His purpose in fellowshipping with sinners is clearly stated. I agree. But, and this is my point, he did not use drive by techniques that kept Him isolated and, thus, "untainted," from the "world." rather, it was out of a continuing feelowship with these people that he made many of His disciples. jt: I don't know what your son has to do with this other than being your
son JD but Jesus kept Himself holy, undefiled and separate from sinners (Hebrews
7:26) or He would not have been fit to go to the cross in our place and
represent us before the Father today. Remember bad company corrupts good
morals. jt
Peace be with you.
