He was not under grace and knew very little of it. His God was not personal -- "fatherhood" was not the emphasis. Adoptive-sonship (we all do believe in that, don't we??) was unknown to him. His judgements -- the judgments of God were physical ones. Adam and Eve were driven from the Garden -- not sent to hell. That sort of thing.
