I have to admit that I have spent way too much time responding to this.  It won't hurt my feelings if we stop here.  Or, perhaps we could just discuss the primary, most important points one at a time.  I have many unread messages and it does not look like I will get caught up on reading TruthTalk any time soon.

Happily for you, TT seems to have slowed a bit. I recognize the feeling of having spent too much time on your response; I appreciate your taking the trouble. I don't mind letting you have the last word for now, either, as a few other topics are occupying my mind simultaneously. It won't surprise you if I say that parts of your reply offer me more challenge than others; I'm saving your post and will certainly ponder the points you've made, perhaps returning to them in smaller doses later as you suggest. As I said at the outset, I have a less systematic and developed view on the question than you likely do at this point. This exchange is helping me to develop mine.

In that connection: I can't help but think--and I'm not using this as a copout--that, despite appearances, a lot of what we have been doing is not really defending or arguing for our respective positions one against the other so much as setting forth what each position means and making the connections within it; our positions so determine our understanding of the words we use that there's not quite enough intersection of meaning. Not that I regard such a situation as hopeless! But you're right, it'd take more thought and effort than either of us is up for right now. Thanks, David--
