Some of these personal packages eventually will be the next "official" packages. But as some distributions have quite long development-cycles (debian, ubuntu, redhat/centos), and have a policy of no feature-updates in one release, one might want to stay more current with _some_ software packages while relying on a very stable base.
Thus on e.g. ubuntu LTS it is quite common to include PPAs for more current LibreOffice, KDE, PostgreSQL, thunderbird, google chrome and other stuff that progresses much more rapidly than the underlying OS. greetings Robert -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.11 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://www.enigmail.net/ iQGcBAEBAgAGBQJSTY4kAAoJEPBinSjWQTiEn7YMAIybvXZaP8/U6lfKEzt+Et6r ORUbvX0GGPremwII1AAEOWKTutYkN1SKxV8odJhInzV3T52Hs4i7r1MnA5lqPdtx gQzotBVzQVZZPdbcCzoPeoamh/vi7ENaspfmoiqmEfM/HAkZ7CHv9KB+RblT3SJ+ 2vjkaCuzs+4XUhjF9yyxFb9JVHeTVjGjIRHsiZ3VYkBhbR3WVboFkeu+NpOrpP1T Vmn6Zh6BJiNxh6ZC2JUPlcavTYn4t09HwnEkzYLbDmdoVkR/mahpJQBloXl58XlJ y2czRcC76DJu4txZPMBa9ZVYzwbTN0OLEraZ+qyrh36TDmEGDMN6jAXVxTukwbQQ sWA+xfHpV6NDP6UxwgB7GltRYUF6C7ybcFVNXBMQceMWmQMasqh/DkGoJnPSC7tE Deixwe5au0vG2WlUX1tkXwflVvvHeUdokr06y2dWHbu7ablgW/sQjeffLdhY4X3P +oUzhDfVLQ0EyqtdaaoE63zZ5BdyjWqJ4rJQXNWqfw== =cSQI -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
