I agree. Do you have time to do a first try? placing it in contrib for 
2.2 would be a start, and when it's proved, we can simply move it to 
official with just a rebuild.

If we make sure it's upgradeable, we can forward port the splitted 
package to 3.0 as well, if it can do something useful in a 2.6.x 
setting. If not we need to obsolete the one in 3.0 with something useful. :)
