Yes they are, and yes it will. But if you are planning on using
virtualization, AMD is a better choice. I would recommend HP DL385 for
smaller virtualization needs (max out RAM!!!).

Please note that if you install a 64-bit host-OS you need a processor
with VT-instructions to be able to run 32-bits guests with any
reasonable performance, or so I have read.

Any 64-bit procesor will run just fine with a 32-bit OS. I just
installed RedHat on a Xeon the other day, and will run VMWare on it next
week (wanted AMD, but supplier was out of stock and I'm in a hurry...).

Go with a vendor, like Morten says. Better parts, easier to get hold of
parts, better case design and with option of extra service contracts
(maybe you don't need them, but if you leave your job one day...).

Linux support is good too. Stock installs of TSL, RedHat and Ubuntu on
IBM, Dell and HP has worked flawlessly for me.
