As Jon and others mentioned, all Apache software is licensed under a
modified BSD license that basically states "you can do whatever you want
with the code as long as you give Apache credit for it". Any derivative
you write can be licensed in any way you see fit, as you long as you give
Apache credit for their code. You also seem to have some misconceptions
regarding the GPL. If you wrote a derivative of a GPLd piece of software,
you would be forced to let it "see the light of day outside company
walls". Any code licensed under the GPL must be distributed freely.
