For anyone interested, I solved this by... yep, restarting my Win2k machine. As it tried to shut down it reported that Opera 5 had a Java2 runtime open with an Unable to Write Memeory error on Hashtable - this was the only unusual thing and I've no clear idea what this could have meant... Surely Opera was running an entirely different JVM?
