This is true and I do not like it, however I am more concerned that it might
not be possible to include closed source libraries in a mostly opensource
app. This was another reason that I originally preferred the LGPL'ed
FreeMarker.
Regarding the use of FreeMarker in a closed source application, the LGPL
appears to contain viral clauses similar to the GPL. Unless there are
alternatives that can be used in place of FM, it would seem an application
would fall within the contaminated part of the license.
So FM has a slightly better license but maybe not enough that it can be sold
as a better alternative based on license, (I think it has other virtues,
however.)
