If you do javascript properly all browsers are compatible.  We've used javascript very
successfully in some our projects over a wide range of browsers.  A little bit of well
planned javascript can go a long way.

A good reference to see what is supported by which browser (and version) is Dynamic 
HTML,
The Definite Reference by Danny Goodman from O'Reilly.
