Here's a proposal for the turbine list. I would like to put WM under the
ASF and make it an ASF project. We would then integrate the good ideas
from Velocity and have a really good project. Alterantely Velocity could
remain separate, I don't care.
Yes, it woul be hosted at ASF, like any other project, with the same
structure as every other project, and the code donated to the ASF.
I do need WebMacro to survive intact as a code base with its current
interfaces, plug points, and features. I depend on all of that in the
projects I work on, and so do a lot of people. I don't intend to control
that, I just want it to be understood that what I'm talking about is
putting *WebMacro* under ASF, not pulling it a part and putting up
some related project with similar but different uses. You can pull
the code into another project if you want to put it together in a
completely different way--that's fine.
This would have to be put to a vote on my list as well, but I want
to get the reaction here first.
I had planned to eventually do something like this with WM anyawy. I
hadn't planned to do it this early, but obviously there will come a
point where I move on to something else and WM has to be hosted
somewhere. By no means is that going to happen soon--but perhaps
it's time to start transitioning it to the community.
There is an issue that might come up: some WM users have developed GPL
applications based on WM. I'd rather not just cut them off--hopefully
there is some ASF style license that is compatible with the GPL so
that these people can continue to rely on WM. If it's not possible
I will release all of my improvements to both trees as long as I am
able to do that--but it's not a showstopper.
