Actually, it was not, but I did create the variable. It turns out that, if
there is no hard-coded home directory and no TOMCAT_HOME environment
variable, it gets the home path from the invocation (at least in UNIX) from
$0.
Anyway, I have found that the problem is due to a checksum error in tar.
