Totally agree on that. The entry page should consist of a large clearly arranged main menu (as in the Python docs or the old TG1 toolbox) linking to the main sections ("getting started", "the gears in detail", "recipes", "tutorials", "extending and contributing", "reference") which should have a nagivation bar like in the PHP docs. The navigation bar should then show all subsections and link back to the head of the section and the main menu.
The main menu entries could also get different visual cues in form of icons/colors/themes which are then repeated in the templates of the individual sections.
