I'm pleased to announce the Display Shelf TurboGears (+Flex) widget that

As far as I know, this is the first example of a Flex component wrapped as a
TurboGears widget. It was easy to do, and it's a very spiffy effect.

Too bad it's not as useful if it rules out a lot of users that either don't have flash or have an old version of it. This is the first site (the demo) that I tried using that didn't work with my flash install. Since I run a very up to date install of SuSE Linux, I believe that other Linux users will have troubles using this widget. (There's a newly released Flash 9, I haven't installed it yet but it is so recent that we can count that to be unavailable
on every box that doesn't belong to an update-addicted user :-))

Are you able to view YouTube videos? I heard recently that YouTube switched to requiring Flash 9 because of some security issue with Flash 8. Overall, from what I hear Flash 9 adoption is moving pretty fast, but I haven't seen independent stats to know how fast. I will grant that not everyone has Flash 9 installed now, though.

This is, IMHO, the worst problem with Flash. There are other problems, such
as usability, bookmarking, etc.

I'm not sure that this displayshelf would've been possible in older Flash versions. Adobe added optional static typing to ActiveScript and made the flash vm code run very fast. (the display shelf adds a reflection for images that are served locally).

The bookmarking and accessibility problems are long gone in Flash. Usability is a problem with apps in every technology :)

Anyway, it is nice to see this widget (saw that on the client's Windows
machine). Nice work.

Thanks!
Kevin
