Florent, The error came about through the fact that the Cheetah install required header files which were not installed by default.
When I installed the correct headers Cheetah installed OK - this is documented in the Ubuntu specifics, but because I thought I knew what I needed to do as I had installed successfully on other platforms I did not think to look at the Ubuntu-specific information, which is very clear - a case of RTFM! I will be doing a clean install in a while, so I will test it again then.
