Thanks for the comment.

Yes I installed python2.5 alongside 2.6.2 using:
sudo apt-get install python2.5

I am going to try Kevin's suggestion of "sudo apt-get install
python-all-dev"   next

And yes, I am currently moving forward with the tutorials using 2.6.2... and
so far no problem.  (must be those crossed fingers) :-)
