you end with a lot of templates to support each configuration
combination.

In TG we have always used case distinctions in the paster templates, so we could support different combinations of options with one set of templates. This allows a lot of flexibility. In Pyramid they use a separate template set for each combination of options which makes the templates simpler but hard to maintain due to the duplication and it limits the amount of option combinations they can support.
