I find the RSS feed facility for customised JIRA queries a very helpful way of keeping up with JIRAs. It gives much more control than a mail filter does. I still get the notifications in my inbox, but when I want to get a quick overview of recent activity the RSS feed is preferable.
If you haven't noticed this feature, try following the "issues" or "comments" link next to "RSS" on for example [1]. This gives you the opportunity to subscribe to the query in your favourite RSS reader. Kelvin.
