Hi, I've tested a new version (0.9.11) on Linux and on Windows - it seems that tuxpaint has big problems with locale and fonts and also it seems, that developers have forgotten to do some things, which were discussed in previous letters - look at http://tux4kids.net/pipermail/tuxpaint-dev/2003-April/000961.html and http://tux4kids.net/pipermail/tuxpaint-dev/2003-March/000915.html
Would be great if these bugs were fixed ASAP: 1. Lithuanian (and Polish) symbols are displayed uncorrectly in Windows and Linux :( This worked correctly with CVS version after Bill added patches from Robert Glowczynski (see tuxpaint-i18n mailing list). I've put screenshots of incorrectly working 0.9.11 version and correctly working 0.9.10 version + some paches from CVS on ftp://files.akl.lt/debian-linux/misc_packages/stable/games (see files tuxpaint_0.9.11_bad.png and tuxpaint_0.9.10+CVS-good.png). Also there are correctly working sources + diff file and debian packages for woody. I tried to play with different LANG, LC_ALL and LC_CTYPE settings, also with tuxpaint.c but without any results - it seems the sources are changed too much - I'm not SDL programmer and changes, added to support Right to Left are under my knowlidge :(. If Bill is too busy, maybe Robert Glowczynski could help again ? 2. There are *big* problems with typing Lithuanian symbols with all styles except first 4. This is because only default font has iso8859-13 symbols, but efont_serif - doesn't :( Fortunately I found open and free serif fonts, that contain iso8859-13 symbols. In debian systems this is ttf-freefont package - I simply renamed all FreeSerif fonts to efont_serif and overwrote original tuxpaint efont_serif* fonts. And problems with typing Lithuanian symbols dissapeared at all :) If you don't use debian you can download all FreeSerif fonts from any debian mirror, for example from http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/t/ttf-freefont/ (download newest tar.gz) or from http://savannah.nongnu.org/download/freefont/ 3. Earlier there were problems with displaying lithuanian uppercase letters "ĖŠŽŪ" (all these symbols are latin "ECZU" with dots or ticks on top), now I can't verify this as Lithuanian symbols aren't displayed at all :(. Lowecase letters "ėšžū" (latin "eszu" with dots or ticks on top) were dispayed without problems. It seems that Tuxpaint simply doesn't show dots or tick on top of uppercase letters (I don't know SDL, but I think, that too little room is given for uppercase letters, so dots and tick on top of them simply don't fit in). and a few suggestions: 1. Guess, Tuxpaint pictures should be in My Documents/My Pictures catalogue as default on windows. 2. It would be great if stamps could be resized (or at least 3 sizes - small, medium and big could be choosen). For example, now penguin is noticeably smaller than fish, so it is impossible to draw penguin eating fish for his breakfast :) 3. Very important feature is absend in Tuxpaint - ability to select and move (cut, copy, paste, etc.) the selected region. This feature presents even in very simple programs (like Paint in Windows, or Xpaint in linux), so guess it has to be added. 4. I think tuxpaint should have button "Show All pictures" in open dialog. When this button is pressed, simple view of files and directories (with current location and button "UP") should be displayed and any picture file (ex. bmp, xpm) could be opened from any location (ex. from /usr/share/pixmaps). Now tuxpaint-import program can use only advanced users :( and many kids can't work with their own drawings, created with other programs. I think all bugs and feature request shoud be in one place (mailing list isn't a good place to trace bugs for pretty big program like tuxpaint) - should I report bugs and suggestions to http://tux4kids.net/bugs/ ? Or maybe developers want to use sourceforge's issue tracking system? I still think that bugzilla is a better solution, because it contains more features and is easier to use than CVSTrac - my friend can setup bugzilla for tux4kids if tux4kids developers don't have time. Besides, it is much easier to check all "open" bugs before releasing new version then finding these bugs from mailing list.
