Having just watched it, I must ask anyone on the list, including Chief Barnhart and any other late night enthusiasts: Is this the first time Dave has done three segments with a guest? The interview consumed virtually the entire show.
My armchair quarterbacking says that while Letterman asked some tough questions (which he was under no obligation to do, as he is merely the host of a comedy show), his attitude towards McCain (and his opinions about Palin) were very different when McCain was in the room. Too me, that smacked of being disingenuous. I have seen Dave have guests on the show with whom he's had differences (most notably was his interview with O'Reilly two years ago), and he's always been the same... not disrespectful, but honest. To me, this is part of a larger situation. On last night's show, Dave seemed worried that if he asked the wrong question or pressed too hard on something, McCain would walk away, snap, or worse. Obama treated McCain he same way during debates, and Biden treated Palin the same way when they met for their debate. Why did Dave hold back, and why must everyone else seemingly do the same when they see the Republican candidates face to face? Certainly Obama is getting the third degree regarding Ayres, ACORN, and everything else under the sun. Why can't the opposition be subjected to the same treatment? -- Kevin M.
