I didn't see the Rosie show either but watched Ellen's and also thought it was the better way to put together a contemporary variety show. No famous names just unusual - and impressive - acts. (And yes, I too fast forwarded through the kid singing Proud Mary.)
But I don't think Ellen was responsible for much more than hosting and her pre-taped visit to the impersonators show. A couple of times she said she had not even seen the acts before. Most likely the credit goes to the producers.
