I am thinking of how many years in purgatory will be added to Zell's sentence because he singledhandedly gutted the LA Times. Yes, I know bashing the LAT is something of a favorite sport in Los Angeles, and in many ways it has always deserved it. But for all of its puffy, self-important, brown-nosing indulgence, the LAT has been the best newspaper west of the Mississippi, (certainly better than anything up here in NoCal) and one of the country's best papers. I know there are lots of challenges for daily papers, and even the best run company may eventually fail. But the Times as run by the Tribune has never had even a decent chance.
