What it comes down for me is that while I think the SNL bands are
generally mute-worthy, they are brand names and have achieved some
notoriety, whereas the contestants on AI are mostly subject to
whatever level of blandness that the audience and the judges want, and
don't have the clout to stand up to that pressure. Not that all the AI
acts are the same, but there is a sound that they're going for.
