That's basically true.  For example, this year there's a 16-year-old from 
Starkville, Mississippi, and although I don't know if she will win, I can 
guarantee you the judges will make sure she makes the top group.  She's exactly 
what they want on the show -- which is someone who (1) can demonstrate real 
control, and (2) produces a very nice sound.

There are actually quite a few good singers this year.  And, I'd much rather 
listen to something that's pleasing to my ears than just noise -- which is what 
I mostly hear on SNL and Letterman.

What it comes down for me is that while I think the SNL bands are generally 
mute-worthy, they are brand names and have achieved some notoriety, whereas the 
contestants on AI are mostly subject to whatever level of blandness that the 
audience and the judges want, and don't have the clout to stand up to that 
pressure. Not that all the AI acts are the same, but there is a sound that 
they're going for.
