IIRC, he did a country song, and he did it pretty well.

To the larger point, SNL likes to book the top of the charts, with
minimal regard for artistic merit (see Ashlee Simpson). The Late Show,
which has a lot more slots to fill, brings in a lot of artists who
fall under "alternative"; much of the music reminds me of watching
"Subterranean" on MTV2 a few years back.

As far as Idol goes, it's an entirely different kettle of fish:

That may well be true, but how many of the Idol contestants can write
songs, or play instruments well, or get along with bandmates?
Obviously, some have gone on to, but many others haven't.
