I can't speak much to the issue of current artists on the top charts, I don't listen to music much on the radio. After the Grammys I will buy a song or two (I bought "Rich Woman" this year, and really dig it, but I don't think you are referring to either Allison Krause or Robert Plant above). I can accept your view that you enjoy the final 36 singers on AI for what it is, your taste. As I have noted, I have not heard more than 5 performances in almost 3 years that I would willingly listen to again, and only one (last week) that I would consider buying. But I am trying to find away to make peace with this show by taking it as some insight into what sells in the pop music market. There does seem to be some kind of disconnect in your argument though. AI explicitly says it is looking for a singer who will be a top charting recording artist. You say all of the top 36 or so each year are better than the kind of artists who top the charts. So how can AI singers be better than Top Charting singers? If AI = Top Charting, then how can AI > Top Charting? Or, to put it another way, if Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood are two of the most successful AI contestants, and they are also top charting recording artists, then doesn't that suggest that the best AI contestants are the same as most top charting recording artists, not better? When I read your criticism of "90 percent of the recording artists who top the charts these days" I think of singers just like Clarkson and Underwood, so I am not sure what distinction you are making. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ TV or Not TV ....
