So, Alec Baldwin makes a joke on Letterman (I know... who knew Alec
Baldwin knew what a joke was), and it drew the ire of a bunch of
people who have nothing better to do than be offended by jokes. I was
more than prepared to defend Alec Baldwin (I know... me defending a
Baldwin), because the amount of venom being unleashed against him had
nothing to do with him being a talentless, two-faced, disingenuous oaf
of a man (which are my chief criticisms of the guy), but instead they
attacked a guy because he had the lack of originality to make fun of a
subject that has been made fun of since the dawn of time (he inserted
the name of a race of people into the joke... could have inserted any
of a hundred different races... probably chose one at random... the
joke had nothing to do with the race... could have not mentioned a
race of people at all and the joke would have played the same... but
people, many not of that race, took offense).

So, I was going to stand up for the Baldwin... but then the Baldwin
caved in and apologized.

And that, my friends, is what makes him a Baldwin. He'll be the court
jester until he senses someone's displeasure, at which point he'll be
something else. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

Instead of being a man and saying "It was an f-ing joke," he mousingly
hemmed and hawed, and offered up a sad and, frankly, empty apology
(when one says words like "I do apologize to anyone who took offense,"
what you are really saying is, "this is your fault for being offended,
not mine"... empty). For the Baldwin to evoke the name of a lesser
Baldwin as having "educated" him on the issue (again, not an issue...
it was a joke) is just pathetic, like saying "Paris Hilton just gave
me the best piece of advice."

Alec... man up. Grow a pair and get some convictions, then stay true
to them. Then and only then will people rise to your defense. Until
then, you are on your own.
