Come on, Kevin, rule number one of public relations when a potential problem occurs is to do what it takes to make the problem go away as soon as possible. Baldwin has enough enemies from his political activism and the longer the story drags out, the more chance they have to tag along and take shots at him. You're right that some groups get offended to suit their PR needs or some organizations take offense just to prove to some ethnic group or interest group that this organization is looking out for their interests and that helps at fundraising time. Baldwin loses nothing (besides perhaps your grudging respect) by making an insincere apology and making sure the matter goes away.
