I know nobody believes me, but I tried with Whedon. Repeatedly. I see
him interviewed and he seems like a good guy. Intelligent. Funny. But
that doesn't seem to crossover into his work.

My friends used to sit and watch Buffy with me, pointing out
everything that was cool about it (if "Hush" was the episode featuring
the death of mom, I saw it). I enjoyed the pilot episode of "Angel,"
but by episode two it reverted to the same witless banter and
predictable storyline as Buffy. I gave "Dollhouse" five episodes, each
sucking more than the previous. I tried a few times with "Firefly"
(admittedly the second time was because I fell in love with Jewel on
"Stargate: Atlantis"), and it reminded me of high school, where the
least cool kids on campus THOUGHT they were cool, and acted with
unearned machismo.

I admit that I give reality TV no benefit of the doubt, but please
believe me that I really have tried with Whedon's shows. At day's end,
I want to be entertained. If his shows were entertaining, I'd watch
them. They aren't. I don't.
