I only really like to do two things in Vegas - eat, and play poker. The days of greasy bacon and rubbery scrambled egg buffets are long gone (well, they are still there, and you can get a meal with as much hash browns and macaroni and cheese as you can choke down for $6.99, but for that I would rather eat at Taco Bell). They have lots of chain and designer restaurants, but nothing you can't get at home. Imperative to get to at least one, and ideally a couple of different, quality buffets during your trip. The good buffets have a wide variety of food, much of it prepared while you wait, or at least within the last half hour. My favorite of these is the The Carnival World Buffet at the Rio, which I think was the first of these higher grade buffets in Vegas - there are a lot more of them around now. We were there last May and I think lunch was around $17.00. We also ate at the Buffet at the Wynn, which was maybe $7.00 to $10.00 more, but fancier - a bit less variety, but a step up in quality. I had more good lamb chops than I could have gotten for 4 times the price at a regular restaurant, and my wife ate enough crab legs and shrimp to cover all the money she lost at the blackjack table. And we both ate much too much other food in addition. You can play poker almost anywhere there, but my favorite st to play at the fanciest casinos that still have lower limit games. It is comfortable, ventilated enough that you don't get sick from all the smoke, and entertaining to see people dressed up (fancy or slutty). If you go to the Mirage or Bellagio you may see some famous poker players as well. I agree it is worth spending at least one evening downtown at the Fremont experience - though I am not quite as charmed by it as some others. A couple of hours and I am ready to get back to the Strip. If I am going to play 21 or craps I might stay downtown longer to try to find cheaper tables, though you can find these at the seedier venues on the Strip. My wife likes the Cirque De So-lei shows - I hate them. I went with her once as payback for having inadvertently taken her to an old fashioned burlesque show at a fairly upscale hotel when we first got married (she had bosoms shaken in her face during most of the night). If you like the Canadian circus, I think there are three different varieties of it running in Vegas. We heard good things about the Bette Midler show when we were there, but the tickets were more than I wanted to spend. I wouldn't go to the Cher show if they were paying the customers, but of course some folks love her. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
