A con artist who claimed to have proof that David Letterman bedded
several female staff members tried to extort $2 million from the the
funnyman, he told his audience Thursday night.
The stunning admission came hours after Letterman testified before a
grand jury and admitted to "sexual relationships with members of his
staff."
"This morning, I did something I've never done in my life," said
Letterman. "I had to go downtown and testify before a grand jury."
The "Late Show" host received a package from an individual who claimed
to have information on his dalliances with female employees and said
he would be outed unless he came up with $2 million.
Letterman contacted the Manhattan District Attorney's office and an
investigation ensued.
Investigators instructed Letterman to mail a phony $2 million check to
the individual, which led to the extortionist's arrest on Thursday.
Letterman, 62, was a long time bachelor who finally married longtime
girlfriend Regina Lasko in March, when he announced it on air.
"They say, 'Well, why did it take you so long to get married?' and, of
course, the answer honestly is we wanted to make sure we had the
prenup just right," he joked.
"I had avoided getting married pretty good for, like, 23 years," he
said. "I secretly felt that men who were married admired me - like I
was the last of the real gunslingers."
Letterman and Lasko had dated since 1986.
In 2005, a Montana handyman pleaded guilty to plotting to abduct
Letterman's son with Lasko. Kelly Frank, 43, was sentenced to 10 years
in prison for the scheme, which came to light when a buddy tipped off
cops he was planning to abduct the toddler.
After the wedding announcement, guest Julia Roberts teased Letterman
about getting hitched.
"You're bound for eternity," she said and Letterman replied, "That's
right, and never been more deeply in love."
