It seems to me that the problem that people are perceiving is the
favoritism - she was on the show not because of any particular talent
on her part, but because Letterman had a relationship with her.

Having said that, Iran allegedly continued to pursue nuclear weapons
today, the economy continued to tank, Obama came back without a deal
in his pocket after
throwing away 2 million dollars to travel to Europe, and China
continued to take
over the entire continent of Africa, a place which is essential to our
long-term security.  And yet an allegation that Letterman was boinking
the cute girl we used
to sit next to in class who Was Sure We Were A Very Nice Guy But is
what dominated 90% of the news.  (*rolling eyes.*)
