I don't think the machine is aware of my intent.

Granted, I could set channel A to record while I'm watching it live,
and that would force the switch from B to C to occur in the
background. (Maybe. What if I'm watching two consecutive shows on
channel A, 9-10 and 10-11? Does the foreground channel stay put at 10?
I should try this out.)

I bristle at having to devise my own workaround to compensate for
poorly designed software.
