Except...Robertson really is in a much different category than O'Reilly and
Sharpton (and much different than Moore). He is even different than Limbaugh
(though, as we saw this week, not that different). He is not just a gas bag
or a blow hard ro an asshole. Robertson comes close to being in the same
category as Osama bin Laden. If I were a Muslim, or a responsible citizen in
a predominatly Islamic culture, I would feel a moral obligation to speak out
and condem the hatred and intolerance of someone like bin Laden - to make it
clear to outsiders, and (even more importantly) to insiders that he does not
speak for us - that he is perverting our religious and spiritual values and
beliefs and traditions. The vast majority of Muslims are not hateful
assholes who glory in the death and suffering of infidels - but too many
remain silent, and even allow themselves to take some gratification from the
over the top rhetoric of the bin Ladens of thier world. Robertson is a hate
mongerer, who glories and pleasures in the death and suffering of those he
considers to be infidels. He does not speak for me, he does not speak for
Christianity, and Christians and responsible citizens in predominatly
Christian cultures have an obligation to clearly condemn him and to
marginalize him.
