Sidebar to the frivolity: Jimmy Dean was, I'm pretty sure, the first
television celebrity I ever met. I don't remember when, exactly, but
either toward the end of the TV show's run or just after, he was
sitting in the back of the car next to ours at LaGuardia airport, and
we chatted just a bit while waiting for the traffic to clear. I, too,
was a fan of the show for Rowlf, but also for him and the music, and I
recall he was darned friendly to this tongue-tied preteen.
