It's because Cronkite had the title. Now Cronkite was the man in charge in many ways--Don Hewitt was his original executive producer and as director of the Doug Edwards newscast was more interested in the visual look of the program. Almost anyone who worked with Cronkite will say that he had final say on story placement and what went where (and he did make phone calls when necessary to correspondents to get information), not to mention making sure he had his minimum "magic time" on camera. Rather and Schieffer also had the title and I would assume that they had certain amounts of pull on story placement. To a lesser extent, Williams may have similar pull. Couric? I have no idea, but since Uncle Walter had the title, everyone since Uncle Walter gets the title. -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
