Spring pledge drive usually starts after February sweeps, which have a little over one more week to go. I don't know why WNET and WLIW want to get a jump, but there you are. And just because the first airings of "Pioneers of Television" weren't in pledge time doesn't mean that the reruns will be. (And as we found out once, only Ken Burns has the clout to keep his shows out of pledge--I don't think "Pioneers"' producers care about that one whit.) Meanwhile, I wonder why "Independent Lens" schedules during pledge drives at all, since they seem to get pre-empted, even when they put on something that's pledgeable (the "Grey Gardens" behind-the- scenes show a few years ago, which WTTW didn't run in Chicago and has yet to run). -- TV or Not TV ....
