He recreates Gilbert's raspy shriek rather well (near flawlessly to my
ears), but I disagree with the contention that such fidelity would have been
even necessary. All that was necessary would be someone to sound something
like a 'Donald Duck' if the goal was continuity. People would not have
noticed if the duck sounded slightly different. (And they could have even
gotten mileage from playing up Gilbert's dismissal by casting something
completely opposite -- a melodious voice.) It's not like trying to cast for
a character with an actual personality as exhibited by a long body of work.

It probably would be harder to recast the Geico gecko today, as he now has a
personality and a voice keyed to it.
