I think what David was referencing was that in the story arc last season
characters went back in time, then returned to their own time and had to
deal with the unintended and unforeseen consequences of their actions in the
past for their new present (mostly the nature of some of their key
relationships were different, and in some cases their jobs and personalities
were different, and there were some differences in history)

Often in TV science fiction time travel either has no such consequences, or
the consequences are reversed by the plucky actions of the cast by the end
of the episode. In this case, the entire season's arc was about dealing with
the time consequences - or rather, the time consequences were an excuse to
change and play around with the dynamics of the cast relationships.
