You don't have to have cable for ESPN 3. Your ISP needs to provide it.

You still need cable in order to have access to ESPN3.

At the conclusion of today's final day of Wimbledon coverage on NBC, the
on-air staff - Ted Robinson, Jimmy Roberts, John McEnroe, and Mary Carillo -
sat in the studio and discussed some of their favorite Wimbledon memories.
Carillo mentioned how the explosion of popularity for McEnroe and other
American stars in the late seventies led NBC to institute "Breakfast at
Wimbledon" - live coverage of the Gentlemen's and Ladies' finals on Saturday
and Sunday mornings - a feature which is now in its 33rd year.

Then Ted Robinson turned to the camera and said: "And so, right, Mary, a
significant moment for tennis. We've enjoyed so many championships, champions,
and great matches here. And now, we at NBC say goodbye to the All England Club
after a 43-year partnership and thank them for a lifetime of memories."

And that's all they said on the matter. Cue the closing credits.

A web search turned up more information, from the Twitter feed of CNBC
sports business reporter Darren Rovell (http://twitter.com/#!/darrenrovell).
Some of his tweets today:

NBC has announced it has lost out on future Wimbledon rights: "We are
proud of our 43-year partnership with the All England Club & while we would
have liked to have continued our relationship, we were simply outbid." (SNIP)

I'm not advocating for tape delay, just saying ESPN couldn't give a good
bid for the Olympics because they knew they couldn't make $ live

Bad game of telephone. NBC told the All England Club they would be
willing to GET RID of all tape delay by 2014.

Dick Enberg did some early round matches for ESPN this year, I expect
McEnroe will do Wimbledon for ESPN, and maybe Carillo to if she can get NBC to
let her do that and the Olympics.

I think the parallel to the Olympics is disingenuous - for better of worse
NBC runs those like a Reality Show out of their Entertainment Division. One of
the major Tennis Tournaments still must be treated as primarily a sporting
event if it is going to have any credibility at all. There really is no excuse
for having important matches of such a major event on tape delay (as at least
we on the West Coast had this week). ESPN had live coverage of earlier rounds
that started at I think 4:00 am out here - I happened to be up for other
reasons and watched several days, and when I was not I just recorded it. I
never understand the argument about higher ratings for delayed viewing (in that
coveted 10:00 am Tuesday slot?) - do they really mean that if they ran it live
and then again on delay they would not get as many or more viewers? No. What
they really mean is that they want to get the big advertising bucks for the
Today Show *and* big bucks for Wimbledon. This would be something like NBC
running a three hour special episode of The Voice in prime time on the West
Coast next year, and then putting on the Super Bowl on tape delay starting at
11:00 pm, so they could increase their revenue for the entire period.

What this means in the end is that ESPN got Wimbledon because, for all its
problems, ESPN is still primarily about televising sports, while NBC is not. I
suspect those with non-cable access will be able to watch early rounds online
on ESPN3, and the Finals (maybe even the semis) will be on ABC. I think even
NBC this year said that the Finals were available online today with some kind
of special DVR features.
