The year after Ozzy's reality TV show debuted, the show that made him
out to be nothing more than a mumbling old fart whose brain had been
ravaged by drugs, it was announced that he'd be host of the AMAs that
year. I fired off an email to the producer asking if he had taken
leave of his senses, that he was making a mockery of the program and
that hoisting this man up sent the wrong message. He replied that
clearly I had no idea what it took to stay on top in this business --
he stated if I couldn't understand why using Ozzy was a good idea, I
needed to stay out of the entertainment industry. The thing is: I did
understand; I just didn't approve. And I did stay out of the industry.

Now I find myself trying to work with young talent, helping them to
define success for themselves, and trying to set for them goals that
won't cost them their respective souls. But I can't argue with them
when they hold up Charlie Sheen as an example -- after all, he can do
whetever drugs he wants, use and discard as many women as he wants,
offend anyone in the industry he wants, but the industry keeps
inviting him back, because the industry has no sense of right or
wrong. All that matters is how to get attention and how to translate
that attention into ratings or profit. So when my former students
become the next Charlie Sheen or Lindsay Lohan, people need to know
that it is because of moments like this when big decisions are badly
made.

Enjoy the Emmys, whoever watches.
