OTOH, it was unclear what the point of the bit was. As excuses for for stringing together witty references to popular shows, it was quite lame. The Office bit they did later in the show was much stronger. Sheen himself was as appropriate as he could be under the circumstances (most appropriate would have been to just give out the award without comment, but neither the clinical nor occupational narcissism of the context could allow that). But it was just as distasteful a situation as we anticipated it would be. I thought the live crowd did give him a pretty warm reception - looked like at least Jimmy Fallon gave him a standing ovation. I am always a sucker for the Emmys and Oscars, even when they suck. This one was just mediocre. Lynch was fine, with moments of very good mixed with moments of OK, and a few WTFs. I never did get the point of that singing group (was that some kind of Glee reference?). I did like LL Cool J, they put so much lame rap on tv it was nice to have someone do it right, even for a lame bit. I very much liked Lynch's intro of the Entourage guys, better than her other lesbian joke. The thing with the comedy leading actresses was most funny when I mistakenly thought for a few minutes that Amy Pohler was pretending to have mistaken the announcement of her nomination as her winning and going up to get her statue - as it developed it got more and more lame. I never heard of either the actress who won or the show she appears on, but good for her. Maybe I am just really old now, but this seemed like one of the deepest death reels they have ever had. There have been years when bigger stars had died, but almost every name they put up there had really solid TV credentials. The final image was predictable, but appropriate. Since Martindale did win for Justified I can't complain too much about any of the other winners, but there were some irritations for me. I was glad enough that Friday Night Lights got a little love, but they missed the boat doing it by recognizing Chandler. Connie Britton consistently kicked ass on that show - smart and sexy and the real good wife on TV. Meanwhile, Jon Hamm, who I guess Emmy voters think of as just a piece of meat, had his absolute best year in a very, very subtle and demanding performance on the best show on television, it was just silly to overlook him. Similarly, while I dig Modern Family, this season it was a step below last year, while The Office, old and grey and I guess taken for granted by voters, really had one of its best seasons since maybe its second or third year, and probably deserved it more. You can remove the probably from the best actor category - Carell did a great job in his last season, and if anyone ever doubted if he was acting or just being funny, he removed any reason for wondering with what was again a very nuanced and sophisticated performance that finally made his Michael Scott character a full, well rounded person. I have not seen Mildred Pierce yet, but I can say I was a huge fan of Kate Winslet winning - and getting as much camera time as possible (if you know what I mean). I expect Jon Stewart to pull an Oprah next year and throw his endorsement behind Colbert - dude has looked so guilty that last couple of years for winning, and almost gave his award to him tonight. I actually like Colbert somewhat better than Stewart (it is hard to tell because I like them both so much), but I agree with the voters that Stewart's show is probably a JND better. -- TV or Not TV ....
