Based on the direction and distance I've seen quoted in a report I saw (700 yards to the east before striking the first house), it went over the pretty steep-looking ridges on the side of the bomb range before hitting the house. I would have expected those to pretty well make it impossible for a projectile to leave that area unless they were pretty cavalier about what direction it was traveling in relative to the horizontal.
