I think it's just to nudge Matt into re-upping.
I could see Seacrest being offered the opportunity to do contributing pieces for Today - as sort of a training experience for him - and to keep Matt (or whoever replaces him) on his toes. BTW I find Ann extremely disappointing. She's not quick enough on her feet and therefore cannot handle the real news stories. Matt Lauer has told NBC he wants to leave at the end of his current contract. NBC is apparently looking at someone who appeals to the female demos who watch the show and points out that Ann Curry can do serious news. The WSJ broke the story, but I'm posting the NYT link to avoid their paywall: http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/12/08/seacrest-has-options-and-on e-may-be-today-show-anchor/ -- David J.
