It's a fair question. SCG stands nearly in the camera for the monologue and the open, and that doesn't have to change. But the spacing between him and the audience could get too big.
By comparison, with Kimmel's set, they have filled in some of the space on the studio floor with additional seating. If you're there, like I was, it doesn't seem nearly as vast a space as it might if you're sitting further back. But I think the audience isn't as much a part of the show as a result.
