It is the toll taken by the advertiser pull-out, but it also has the
fingerprints of the GOP establishment, and the Romney campaign all over it.
Romney and some other Republicans have been trying to pretend that the
problem here is the offensive use of a word like "slut" ("not a word I
would have chosen" - or something like that, said Romney).
