Quote from the article:

"Although we take license for artistic purposes with the end-title music,
we never want the source music to break from the time period we are trying
to recreate," Weiner wrote to critics, according to Rolling
Stone<http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/mad-men-pulls-dusty-springfield-song-from-season-premiere-20120320>.
"As someone who has a deep appreciation for details, I want to thank you
for bringing this to our attention."

Wiener has created something of a monster, with dedicated fans enjoying
nothing so much as picking historical nits and searching for anachronisms.
See http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/25/magazine/25FOB-onlanguage-t.html for
a nice discussion of this, including Wiener's mea culpa for letting Joan
say “The medium is the message” in 1960 (season 1) even though
*Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man* was not published until 1964.

On the other hand, it seems that he has been more than willing to
intentionally violate historicity when it comes to advertising campaigns -
I can't recall examples now, but I am pretty sure I have looked up a few of
the campaigns they reference in the show, and found that the actual
timeline was significantly different represented.
