Oh, as a broadcaster, I totally disagree, and respectfully so. Dees and
Kasem were institutions. AT40 airs typically in a daypart that isn't highly
rated and isn't something sales relies heavily on at the local level. When
I was offered Seacrest, I dumped that show real fast. No one missed it. As
far as that goes, it is easier to find a station airing CLASSIC AT40 with
Kasey than Seacrest. In the case of Dees, he was billing just fine and one
of the highest grossing revenue morning shows in the country, and Clear
Channel's logic defied anything I've ever seen in the business.

For what it is worth, the two stations here that run AC formats are airing
classic Dees and Kasem against one another on Sunday mornings! (Both airing
against Seacrest!) Now that argument about getting younger ears doesn't fly
when you've got 2 stations airing old shows and getting better results.
(the station airing Seacrest just happens to be owned by Clear Channel.their
competitors have the old ones!)

The point you are missing is that idiots like Seacrest have effectively shut
the door on ANYONE getting into the business. There IS someone out there
other than him, and I resent the fact that his crap doesn't stink, but
everyone else's does. He's nothing special, and overexposure kills the
value of the product.

Radio still serves a useful purpose, but with crap like Seacrest, a case is
made for a non-compelling product.

Seacrest didn't fire those people. He's a guy who is getting young ears
where Dees and Kasem weren't. Clark hired him to do the job he could no
longer do. You don't have to like him, but he is a rare success in a dying
industry.

And radio doesn't have a farm system. It doesn't need one. It needs a death
certificate and a funeral. Beyond local stuff like sports, radio is out.
Because why listen to anything with a commercial if you can just play your
music without interruption via an aux cable from your iPod to your car?

So don't blame Seacrest. Blame the industry for being obsolete.

Why I detest Seacrest? He's put so many legends out of work, and honestly,
ruined radio as we knew it. As a broadcaster, I resent that one person can
come in and displace Rick Dees (Clear Channel fired him for Seacrest), Casey
Kasem (Clear Channel shoved Kasey off AT40 years ago for Seacrest), and Dick
Clark (RIP). Clear Channel overuses him which keeps new talent off the
radio, and it really cheeses me to hear him as the ONLY talent there is in
broadcasting. I refused to run his garbage on any station I've ever
programmed, simply because I feel he's not worth the money. And why would
I want a product everyone else has?

I resent that he's everywhere. Seriously, I get annoyed with seeing him on
virtually every major network (I think CBS is the only one who doesn't have
him under a contract yet).

Radio no longer has a farm system. Anyone going into radio today has
nowhere to advance their careers due to him and people like him. Used to,
you could go from small market Nebraska to Omaha, KC, or anywhere bigger.
Not anymore. Today, more and more people are being cut in radio and their
replacement? Seacrest. What happens if Seacrest were to have something
happen to him like Dick Clark? There's no one out there to replace him.

It's hard to ignore someone who is on so many different venues at one time.
There ARE other people in media other than him. He just wants the facetime,
and he doesn't get it from me!

Terry, I think you have posted this sentiment a few times to the list, and I
have seen other people with very strong anti-Seacrest passions. I wonder if
you can articulate a little more specifically what it is about him that
generates such a strong response? Even if we grant your claim that he is
talent-less, I am not sure what about him what generate such strong
feelings. Why not just ignore him? I am no stranger to having strong
negative feelings towards TV personalities (I have a white hot hatred for
Nancy Grace, for instance); but I think I could give more of a basis for my
anti-Grace passion than simply my view that she has no talent.

Until I started watching AI regularly a few years ago I had no real sense of
who RS was, aside from a few media jokes about his "Seacrest: Out!" sign-off
(which I don't think I have ever actually heard him say - is this one of
those "Play it Again, Sam" myths?). But in the last three years I have
watched AI, and a couple of other singing competition shows (The Voice and
X-Factor, US). RS seems to me to be consistent and significantly better than
anyone who has a similar role on those other shows has ever been. Likewise,
I think he does a better job on the Red Carpet than anyone who has ever done
that on E!, or the broadcast networks. And in a line-up of Guy Lombardo,
Dick Clark and Ryan Seacrest for least obnoxious New Year's Eve Host, I
think Seacrest would win hands down. I have not seen his other E! programs,
or heard him do his radio show, or any of the other dozen or show jobs he
apparently has.

As far as I can tell none of the jobs RS has are particularly important,
but, for what he does, as far as I can tell he does them about as well or
much better as anyone else currently doing the same thing. I am not in love
with him, and don't know that he is a major talent, but I can think of
several bigger reasons for not watching the Today Show than the addition of
RS as what I assume will be some kind of features reporter.
